Oahu's Home Plate for Umpire Excellence

Oahu Baseball Umpires Association (OBUA) is a premier organization dedicated to the training and development of baseball umpires on Oahu. Our mission is to promote fair play and integrity by certifying highly skilled officials, ensuring every game is adjudicated with expertise and commitment.

Our Legacy on the Diamond

Oahu Baseball Umpires Association (OBUA) was formally established in the early 2000s as a successor to the OIA Umpires Group, which was chaired primarily by the late Glenn Ah Sam.

This original group managed umpire assignments for the OIA High School Interscholastic Baseball League since its founding, with the Oahu public school league (Oahu Interscholastic Association, “OIA”). We are a non-profit orginization giving back to our community for the love of baseball.

The organization’s founding objective was simple yet vital — to provide top-notch baseball officiating for all OIA baseball games at every level.

OBUA began as a coordinating body dedicated to the training and development of officials for Hawaii’s public school baseball programs, enhancing the experience for the youth of Oahu.

Since then, OBUA has grown into the island’s leading umpiring organization, serving youth baseball (12U, 13/14U) from Wai‘anae to Hawai‘i Kai. The association also supplies umpires for private club teams, high school showcase tournaments, collegiate leagues, and senior divisions such as the Honolulu Baseball League and select scouting combines.

With games across all competitive tiers, OBUA supports umpires at every stage of development — from beginners to those calling collegiate baseball. Many of OBUA’s elite umpires have been honored with selection to officiate the HHSAA Championship Baseball Tournaments.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Umpire Membership

Membership in the Oahu Baseball Umpires Association (OBUA) opens the door to the top tier baseball umpire organization in Hawaii providing training to the top umpire organization on the island of Oahu.  OBUA is connected to all the major baseball leagues on Oahu, both scholastic and community, and offers a wide variety of games.

OBUA has games all year round enabling a prospective umpire to continue to their love of baseball beyond one’s playing days and yet afford a great opportunity to make substantial hobby monies.

Potentially, an experienced umpire could earn as much as $12,000 to $20,000 per year, if one maximizes umpiring games on the weekends). OBUA is the only Oahu organization that affords you this potential with access to all our games. Umpiring affords you a medium to maintain your physical activity and earn a “few dollars.”
